Useful Concepts & Information Worth Knowing!
Naturist / Naturism
Naturism is a philosophy, a lifestyle, and a community culture that treats nudity as an expression of naturalness, self-acceptance, and human equality — not as sexual content. It is characterized by harmonious coexistence with nature and health consciousness.
Essence:
Acceptance of the body's natural state, in a judgment-free environment, with equality, mutual respect, and a high degree of tolerance regardless of age or gender.
What does it mean in practice?
• Participants are nude or textile-free in communal areas
(beach, campsite, sauna, bath, club, event).
• The emphasis is on the principles of respect, discretion, equality, and naturalness!
• Behavioral norms are generally stricter than in an average public bath.
Important distinction:
Naturism is not synonymous with eroticism. Its goal is realistic body image acceptance, mental liberation, and a communal experience, fostering friendly relationships and family programs.
A blissful moment of relaxation in a sauna. Focus on acceptance and respect.
Nudist
The word 'nudist' refers to a person who likes or is accustomed to being nude, primarily during relaxation, bathing, or sauna use.
Difference compared to a naturist:
• Nudism is more of a practice, not necessarily a philosophy
• Not all nudists adhere to naturist values (community, etiquette, principles, environmental protection, healthy lifestyle)
• However, naturists are generally also nudists
Simply put:
- Nudist = what they do (practices the nude lifestyle occasionally or regularly, but does not live a naturist lifestyle)
- Naturist = why and how they do it (is nude whenever possible where it doesn't disturb others, and dedicates themselves to this lifestyle and way of life)
Textile-free event
A textile-free event is an occasion where participants engage in activities without clothing, i.e., nude.
What exactly does this mean?
• Wearing clothing is not permitted in designated areas
• Towels or robes are generally allowed when moving around or
for sitting.
• Nudity is a condition of participation, not optional.
What is its purpose?
• To create a uniform, judgment-free environment.
• A communal experience where everyone is in an "equal state."
Textile-free sauna
Textile-free sauna specifically refers to sauna use.
What does it mean?
• No swimwear or clothing is worn in the sauna
• Only a towel is allowed, or a sauna sheet (for sitting on or under oneself)
• This is the recommended form for hygiene and health reasons.
• The bench must always be covered with a sauna sheet or towel under the body and feet!
• Only 100% cotton material should be used!
Why is it important?
• Textiles hinder sweating and heat dissipation.
• Swimwear material can overheat, causing skin irritation, and it absorbs chemicals used in pools, which then evaporate when mixed with sweat and enter the lungs, which is unhealthy!
• It is also more hygienic from a communal perspective.
In many European countries, textile-free sauna is a fundamental principle of sauna culture.
Naturist – textile-free event / sauna and bathing
This term denotes a more complex experience where textile-freedom is not just a rule (dress code) but part of the naturist philosophy.
What does it entail?
• Nudity in the sauna, bath, and communal areas.
• Naturist etiquette and behavioral norms.
• A communal, respectful, non-sexual environment.
Basic principles:
• No photography, staring, or intrusive behavior
• All body types are equal and accepted
• The goal is relaxation, not observation
Sexual activity is not permitted, it is FORBIDDEN!
Sauna and pool use:
- Always shower before and after using the sauna and pool!
- In the sauna, always cover the bench under your body and feet with a sauna sheet or towel made of 100% cotton!
- Sauna and steam cabin use is not recommended for people with heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, or current inflammation in the body, as high heat and humidity can exacerbate these conditions and cause serious health damage.
- Use the sauna and steam cabin textile-free, and the pools at naturist-textile-free events.
- Always leave your slippers outside the sauna and pool!
- Do not use the sauna while intoxicated!!!
- After using the sauna and steam cabin, always hydrate, drink plenty of fluids, and maintain your blood sugar levels.
Naturist etiquette
Naturist etiquette is the set of unwritten rules and behavioral norms that should be observed at naturist (nude) beaches, campsites, baths, or communities. Its essence: respect, naturalness, self-acceptance, tolerance, and discretion.
Basic Principles:
- Nudity is not synonymous with sexuality. This is perhaps the most important point. Naturism is about body acceptance and freedom, not eroticism.
- Every body is unique and perfect in its own way.
- No staring, judging, or comparing. Young, old, thin, full-figured – everyone is fine just as they are.
Behavior:
- Do not stare, take photos, or record videos!
- Photography and videography are prohibited, except in designated areas at the appropriate time with the written permission of participants.
- Towel use is mandatory! Always place a towel under yourself when sitting (for hygiene reasons).
- Maintain personal space! Just like in textile-wearing environments.
- Informal/formal address according to local custom. (informal address is the default)
Appearance and comfort:
Nude = default, but depends on weather and temperature
Do not "show off": Direct posing, disturbing others, actions that suggest sexuality, or conspicuous behavior are not acceptable.
What is strictly taboo:
- Public sexual behavior
- Alcohol and other mind-altering substances, and loss of control due to them
- Crossing others' boundaries
- Unwanted advances
- Behave, as everyone is equal.
